What a UPS actually does
A UPS bridges short power outages with battery power, so running processes don't abort abruptly. During a longer outage, the UPS signals the low battery level to your servers, which then shut down gracefully – protecting file systems and databases from the damage a hard power loss can cause. The UPS also smooths out over- and under-voltage from the power grid before it reaches your hardware, reducing hardware damage from "dirty" power.
The right UPS for your environment
For server rooms and small network racks, we rely on the APC Smart-UPS series – the range Schneider Electric explicitly recommends for servers, network racks, and storage systems, available as a rack or tower unit in various power classes. If the main goal is protecting network equipment or peripherals, the Easy UPS On-Line series can be the better fit. Clean shutdown via software
APC PowerChute automates shutdown during a power outage instead of leaving it to chance: PowerChute Serial Shutdown monitors a directly connected server, while PowerChute Network Shutdown coordinates multiple physical servers and virtual machines in the correct order when needed – relevant as soon as more than one device is connected to a UPS, or you're running virtualization.
