Virtualization with Hyper-V & Proxmox

More servers on less hardware – vendor-neutral advice between Hyper-V and Proxmox.

Who is it for?

Companies that want to consolidate multiple physical servers or become independent of individual hardware vendors.

Buying a separate physical server for every new application is expensive, inefficient, and hard to maintain. Virtualization consolidates multiple server tasks onto powerful hardware, with clear advantages in resilience, maintenance, and cost.

  • How many of your physical servers are actually only running at a fraction of their capacity?
  • How long would it take to recover a failed server – and how long could you afford that?
  • Do you know whether Hyper-V or Proxmox is the right platform for your company – and what really separates them in licensing cost?

Two strong platforms, compared vendor-neutrally

We advise you independently between Microsoft Hyper-V and Proxmox VE. Hyper-V makes sense if you're already deeply invested in the Microsoft ecosystem (Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID) and need Windows Server licenses anyway – Hyper-V itself is now only available as a role within a licensed Windows Server, no longer as a standalone free product. Proxmox VE's core is open-source and requires no core-based licensing cost for the hypervisor itself; optional support subscriptions are tiered by response time. Especially since VMware's licensing changes following Broadcom's acquisition, many companies are re-evaluating their virtualization platform – Proxmox has established itself as one of the most sought-after alternatives.

From planning to ongoing operation

After assessing your current servers, we plan the consolidation, handle migrating existing systems into the virtual environment, and manage ongoing operation including backup strategy and monitoring. On request, we set up high availability across multiple physical hosts, so a single machine failing no longer brings your operations to a halt – for details and all the options (including a native Proxmox-Ceph cluster), see our page High Availability for Servers & Storage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Proxmox really free, or are there hidden costs?

The hypervisor itself is open-source and free to use. Optional paid vendor support subscriptions with contractually agreed response times are available – not strictly required for operation, but recommended for production business use. We advise you on which model fits.

We already use a lot of Microsoft 365 – does that automatically make Hyper-V the better choice?

It's a point in favor, but not an automatic decision: Hyper-V requires a licensed Windows Server installation, which causes noticeable licensing costs especially with many virtual servers. We'll work out both options for your specific case.

Can we switch from VMware to Hyper-V or Proxmox?

Yes, that's one of the most common reasons for this project right now. We handle migrating your existing virtual machines into the new environment.

What happens if the physical server everything runs on fails?

That's exactly what the optional high availability across multiple physical hosts is for: if one machine fails, the others take over automatically, so your operations don't come to a stop. For more on the concrete implementation paths – including a native Proxmox-Ceph cluster – see our page High Availability for Servers & Storage.
